Did you know that it is estimated that approximately 95% of expecting parents plan on using a baby carrier for their child? Where do they get their information about products and services for their child? I know that for me personally, I sought advice firstly from other experienced mothers, then from the internet. I had not heard of woven wraps or ring slings when I had my first child, and was introduced to the concept by my cousin when I was pregnant with my second child. I knew this was what I wanted to use to carry my child, proceeded to purchase one and utilised youtube to learn how to use it.
Luckily for me, I also live in a city with fantastic baby wearing groups that meet regularly. The first time I went to a baby wearing meet, I knew no one. I took my woven wrap and ring sling there and my two children and watched quietly as everyone helped each other use their carriers. It was then in this group, that I learnt how to do a ruck with my woven wrap.
So, what are the benefits of a baby wearing meet and why should you go to one?
- Try before your buy.
Baby stores have limited variety of baby carriers. But with such a vast array of options on the market, it would be difficult to have them all in one place for people to try… Except for in a place like a babywearing meet. Everybody brings what they have at home, puts them in a pile and everyone tries everything. This also gives you the opportunity to get honest/unbiased feedback from people who use them everyday.
- Learn new things.
Everybody learns differently. Some learn by doing, some learn by watching. Babywearing meets give people the opportunity to do both. Sit quietly and watch or get hands on experience from other caregivers.
Meets are a safe place for you to learn new ways to carry your child. There are other people to give you little hints and tips that may make a carry just a little more comfortable but also help with maintaining a safe way to carry your child.
- Play time and interaction for the kids.
My son loves baby wearing meets because he gets to play at the park. We always host our baby wearing meets at parks that will cater for the children who will be attending as well. It is also an opportunity for them to interact with other people and practice those people skills we try so hard to teach.
Being a parent is hard work and it takes a village to raise a child. Most of my village is made up of people I met through the baby wearing world. Other parents looking for a way to carry and nurture their child. I didn’t know any of them prior to attending these meets and now I can’t imagine my life without them.
